Afraid of What??? Oh . . .

So, back again I see? I didn't scare you off the first time? Well, there may be hope for you yet. Or maybe it should be hope for me yet? Guess it doesn't really matter.

Ok, Thought for today. Phobias. Most people have them, and I understand some of the ones people have. For instance, Acrophobia - the fear of heights. This one makes a lot of sense, although it should be "fear of falling from heights". Claustrophobia is fairly common, a little less understandable than this previous but still has some logic in it. Now when it comes to the ones where someone has a fear of animals I start to scratch my head. I get it if you came face to face with an animal that could kill you if you pissed it off, but to be rattled at the mere mention of the name of the animal. I don't get it myself. Ophidiophobia is the fear of snakes, sure some of them could kill you but most are quite harmless. I have a snake, I have even been bitten once. Totally my fault I would like to add, but Xerxes' timing is the worst. I was trying to feed him him before going to work. You want to know the first thing that entered my head afterwards ( besides the expletives). How am I going to get him off of me without hurting him. Is that odd, I'm not so sure.

Back to the point, most of the animals people have phobias for are little things that couldn't hurt you if they wanted to. Mice, how can someone be afraid of a mouse. Annoying sure, scary? I can't see it. I have this strange feeling someone is wondering how I would feel if like ten thousand mice were trying eat me alive. I figure as long as I had some cheese and a clear path to run in the opposite direction from where I am throwing the cheese, I'll be fine. Now, I understand that most phobias developed through an instance in someones life and that kind of makes the animal thing plausible, but I haven't finished my rant quite yet.

Here is a short list:

  • Allodoxaphobia- Fear of opinions

  • Ambulophobia- Fear of walking

  • Anthropophobia- Fear of people

  • Barophobia- Fear of gravity

  • Chaetophobia- Fear of hair

  • Chirophobia- Fear of hands

  • Cibophobia- Fear of food

  • Dutchphobia- Fear of the Dutch

  • Gnosiophobia- Fear of knowledge

  • Ideophobia- Fear of ideas

  • Melanophobia- Fear of the color black

  • Mnemophobia- Fear of memories

  • Nephophobia- Fear of clouds

  • Numerophobia- Fear of numbers

  • Odontophobia- Fear of teeth

  • Orthophobia- Fear of property

  • Parthenophobia- Fear of virgins

  • Phobophobia- Fear of phobias

  • Plutophobia- Fear of wealth

  • Verbophobia- Fear of words

I am starting to think that some of theses are not real and that someone is filling in the words while waiting for someone else to start being afraid of it. Can anyone really imagine a guy running down the street, "AAHHHHHH, someone help me. The virgins are everywhere!!!" Yip thought so, most guys would be the opposite.

So, I'm going to end this one with a Phobia that doesn't surprise me to any degree. I somewhat expect that if many people start reading this Blog that I'll get flack for it, but I guess since i'm not Allodoxaphobic here goes

Theophobia- Fear of gods or religion
